Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru, dead at age 96

Jack LaLanne, the original fitness guru, died Sunday, January 23, at age 96, at his home in Morro Bay, California. Apparently, Jack died of  respiratory failure due to pneumonia.

Jack LaLanne, 96, R.I.P.
Jack practiced what he preached nearly till the end of his life: exercising daily, eating healthy food and getting plenty of fresh ocean air.

The son of poor French immigrants, he was born in 1914 and grew up to become a sugar addict, he said. The turning point occurred one night when he heard a lecture by pioneering nutritionist Paul Bragg, who advocated the benefits of brown rice, whole wheat and a vegetarian diet. Paul Bragg told him "'Jack, you're a walking garbage can.”

Jack LaLanne credited fitness with transforming his life as a teen and he worked over the next eight decades to transform others' lives, too. Jack LaLanne hosted a popular workout show for several decades, opened a chain of gyms, and created a popular line of fruit juicers.

He was the original fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down, eat well and pump iron for decades before diet and exercise became a national obsession. He was a TV icon of fitness in the 1950s and 1960s, with regular shows featuring stretching, lifting, aerobics and more.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, two sons and a daughter

Favorite quotes by Jack LaLanne:

"The only way you can hurt the body is not use it. Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it's never too late."

"It's a lifestyle, it's something you do the rest of your life. How long are you going to keep breathing? How long do you keep eating? You just do it."

Prescription drugs and violence

In light of recent tragedy in Tucson, Arizona, it is important to know that a number of legally prescribed drugs, in addition to illegal drugs, can also adversely influence behavior. For example, a number of suicides have been reported in people taking Cymbalta (duloxetine) for urinary incontinence or peripheral neuropathy.

legal drugs and violence
On going war. since invasion of Iraq, has led to a large number of suicides in US troops. These suicides have been linked to antidepressants, antipsychotics and antiseizure drugs whose use exactly parallels the increase in US troop suicides since 2005. Such drugs are widely used for pain and as "mood stabilizers" by troops even though the FDA mandated suicide warnings on Lyrica, Topamaz, Depakote, Lamictal, Tegretol, Depakene, Klonopin and 16 others in 2008.

Time has compiled a list of top ten legal drugs linked to violence:

Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) An antidepressant
Venlafaxine (Effexor) An antidepressants
Fluvoxamine (Luvox) An antidepressant
Triazolam (Halcion) can be addictive, used to treat insomnia.
Atomoxetine (Strattera) Used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
Mefoquine (Lariam) A treatment for malaria,
Amphetamines: (Various) Amphetamines are used to treat ADHD
Paroxetine (Paxil) An antidepressant,
Fluoxetine (Prozac) The first well-known SSRI antidepressant,
Varenicline (Chantix) The anti-smoking medication

I think, the best thing is to watch your habits and health and not to get to a stage where you need medication.

California church launches yearlong fitness boot camp

On Saturday, January 15, Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Orange County, California launched its yearlong health and fitness campaign, sort of a church style boot camp.

Saddleback church
The church-wide fitness campaign is called "The Daniel Plan" – based on Daniel 1, in which the prophet Daniel opts for vegetables and water rather than "defile himself with the royal food and wine." It is a new health program written by leading medical professionals and New York Times bestselling authors on health and fitness, Dr. Daniel G. Amen, Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Mehmet Oz.

The effort is part of Saddleback's Decade of Destiny – a 10-year plan to expand the ministry. The plan includes an element of personal growth meant to equip parishioners to succeed in seven areas: spiritual, physical, financial, relational, vocational, emotional, and mental.  The plan includes a 52-week customized program, a curriculum for small groups, an interactive website with a meal menu, exercise and shopping tips. There will also be monthly conference calls for encouragement.

The event hosted by Pastor Rick Warren brought 6,000 people to the main campus of Saddleback Church. Thousands more watched at the mega-church's other campuses and online.

I can only imagine that the pastor, Rick Warren, must be in the shape of Good year blimp He said that over the past 30 years he has gained three pounds each year. Pastor Warren vowed to lose 90 pounds in 2011,

Go for it!

Fijiwater, is it just a load of hoax in an expensive bottle?

Some people may know Fiji water, those expensive rectangular bottles that sell for about $3.00.

above ground fijiwater& human
The company claims that FIJI Water is drawn from an artesian aquifer, in the island of Fiji, that lies hundreds of feet below the edges of a primitive rainforest. That distance and isolation is part of what makes FIJI Water so much purer, healthier, and richer in taste than other bottled waters. The company also claims that the water has never been touched by human.

This is from the website of Fijiwater:

“Untouched by man
Fijiwater Ad Page
“Please don’t touch the water” – it’s our number-one rule.
FIJI Water’s state-of-the-art bottling facility was designed to protect the purity of our water at every step of the production process, and as part of that strict commitment to quality, no human hands are allowed to touch it. In fact, the facility was built directly on top of the FIJI Water aquifer, where a completely sealed delivery system draws the water up from the protected chamber and places it directly into our iconic square bottles, which are made from the highest-grade terephthalate (PET) plastic resin.
To put it simply, until you unscrew the cap, FIJI Water never meets the compromised air of the 21st century nor is it touched by another human being. No other natural waters can honestly make that claim.” (emphasis is mine)

A little while ago, while browsing unrelated articles, I came across a site that has an Ad, in the article, from Fijiwater. Ironically, as you can see in the picture, the ad had a picture of Water bottle, and water that is flowing above the ground like Niagara Falls. In addition, it has a man standing in water, possibly bare feet and may even have taken a piss in it.

So, when Fijiwater claims its water is bottled directly from underground wells and it has never been touched by human hands, who are they trying to brain wash?

Is Fijiwater just a load of baloney in an expensive bottle?

Money does not grow on trees, so… why is money green?

U.S money,  Greenback
We know that the plants are green and the, so-called, green initiatives try to preserve nature by recycling our resources. Green food, green energy and green planet are all good. However, if the money does not grow on trees, what is the reason money is of green color?

One possible explanation is that the world GREEN is very similar to GREED, which happens to be the true nature our banksters.

According to Wikipedia, the Green money refers to:
-         Money used for ecological purposes (ecocurrency). It is broadly used in the context of green economists, low carbon economy and political Greens.
-         Throughout the Middle East, Green money refers to money from Islamic businesses, Islamic banks, and the religious sector.
-         The European Union did at one time (and may still now) have green money for agricultural accounting.
-         The term should not be confused with the nickname "greenback" for the U.S. Dollar.

Canadian money color
According to allexperts, most of the world's money is not green and until the Civil War, the US did not have green money either. In fact, our neighbor, Canada’s currency has different colors for various denominations.

During the Civil War, the US Treasury Department developed a special green ink that would make counterfeiting more difficult, using the then-new technology of photography to copy bills.  It was used on the back of all currency (hence the term "greenbacks".  Ever since that time, 1862, US currency has been green.

U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing is responsible for printing U.S. money. Their website has this to say about the U.S. dollar bills and the green color:

“Most have heard or used the term “Greenback” to refer to the United States paper currency. The term originated in the 1800’s to refer to the newly printed, green-colored U.S. currency, and is still a valid description today because the backs of the current Federal Reserve notes are printed with green ink. A green back now is understood to mean any denomination of U.S. currency, which is printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s facilities in Washington, DC and Fort Worth, Texas.

"Although well over 100 years old, today there is more to the green back than just green ink. In the parlance of today’s environmentally conscious society, the greenback truly is “green”. All United states currency is printed on a substrate (currency paper) that is a combination of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen. When cotton and flax (linen is made from the flax plant) are planted and harvested, a certain amount of energy is consumed and carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) is created. This is commonly referred to as a carbon footprint. In this case, the carbon footprint is how much carbon dioxide is produced while growing the materials that make up the paper on which currency is printed.

"Similarly, obtaining the materials to make the ink used to print the currency also has a carbon footprint. While the cotton and flax plants are growing, they consume, through photosynthesis, much more carbon dioxide than is required to produce the currency’s raw materials. In fact, on a per one-dollar note basis, the plants will consume (carbon sequestrations) 46 times the amount of carbon produced obtaining all of the major materials for the one dollar note. And, that is why the greenback is really “green”.

"The Bureau demonstrates its commitment to being an environmentally responsible corporate citizen in several other way. The ongoing retooling of the currency production processes is replacing old printing equipment with the best printing technology available The new presses will consume less ink and employ state-of-the-art air scrubbers, which will significantly reduce air emissions.”

$5,200 fine for growing cucumber

Len Gratto, a 67-year-old man, has lived for 30 years with his wife in their house in Mission, British Columbia, Canada.  Recently, he was fined $5,200 by Mission city hall for growing cucumbers in his basement.

$5,200 cucumber
Apparently, for drug enforcement reasons, Mission City’s Grow-op bylaw programs allow municipal inspectors to enter homes with abnormally high hydro usage and look for evidence of illegal marijuana grow-ops for public safety reasons. Inspectors don’t have to find marijuana grow-ops, but if they find supposed residual evidence, such as high mould readings, they levy search fees and order repairs. If homeowners don’t comply, homes are tagged under the bylaw and effectively condemned as unsafe, and unsellable. Mission has collected $1.43 million in fines from Public Safety Inspection Team searches since 2008. From 2008 to 2010, there were 362 searches.

Len Gratto states that he has never grown marijuana and the ridiculous evidence against him are pictures of some “dirt” on the basement wall and a furnace pipe going up into the chimney, where it should be. He says he and many other Mission residents are being unfairly searched, embarrassed and fined and there is no way in hell he will pay $5,200  fine.

Instead, Len Gratto is planning to join an "imminent class action" law suit against the city, Mission, for hitting him with a 5,200 inspection fee. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association is also expected to join the battle against Mission,

raw milk is banned but marijuana is no problem in Humboldt California

The government agencies, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC). have long demonized raw milk as a public health menace and continue to advice against consuming unpasteurized milk. However the available data does not seem so alarming. CDC statistics show 1,791 total illnesses from raw dairy and 1,609 raw-milk illnesses over 33 years between 1973 and 2005, which amount to an average of just 54 illnesses nationwide. These figures appear miniscule compared to casualties inflicted by other issues such as, alcohol, tobacco, legal prescription drugs, traffic accidents and guns.

Humboldt, marijuana capital
Raw milk fans continue to advocate superiority of raw milk. According to Grist, about 20 states in the country forbid sale of raw milk. California has the most permissive laws in the country with regard to distribution of raw milk -- allowing not only raw milk, but other raw dairy products like butter, kefir, and cream to be sold via retail. However, Humboldt County, in northern California, has long held to a local ban on raw milk sales. The county's ban is being challenged by the state's largest raw milk producer, Organic Pastures Dairy Co., and its founder, Mark McAfee. Raw milk is produced by this company in California and sold into 400 stores and consumed by 50,000 people per week,

Interesting thing is marijuana is a legal crop in Humboldt and it may be the marijuana capital of America. Humboldt marijuana is well known and has even been mentioned in Business week. There are about 78,000 people in Humboldt County between the ages of 18 and 65, and many locals would guess that, at minimum, 50% are involved in the marijuana production industry in some way.

Bison meat is in big demand in the U.S.

Bison herd
Recall old western movies that had native Indians and thundering earth with herds of bison running around. Bison, the majestic beast, was worshiped by native Indians because it provided them food. Gradually, like natives, bison population almost got wiped out. A fewer than 1,000 bisons were left in North America a little over a century ago. Bisons have made a come back and their current population is estimated at about 450,000. Of those, nearly 200,000 are raised in the ranches and farms.

According to USA Today, the demand for bison meat has been growing exponentially even though it is more expensive than beef. Bison meat is supposed to be leaner and healthier than beef and contains low-fat and low-cholesterol. However, the supply has been tight and it is a challenge for the ranchers to keep up with the increasing demand, One of the reasons is Bison grows slower than other livestock.

Bisons are raised in all 50 states, including Hawaii, although most of the production occurs in South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska and Colorado, Apparently, Ted Turner, founder of CNN, is the largest bison rancher with 55,000 heads. Ted’s Montana Grill, a chain of 46 restaurants, established in 2002 and an annual sales of $100 million, sells about 1.5 million pounds of bison a year,

Lesbian fitness trainers sue David Barton Gyms in New York

David Barton Gyms New York
The management of David Barton Gyms, a high end gym chain in Manhattan, NY, is being sued by two lesbian fitness trainers. They are suing for an unspecified amount for "lost wages, lost benefits, other economic damages, shame, humiliation, embarrassment and mental distress.”

According to NYdailynews, trainers, Deborah Cooke and Christina Rodino, charge that their bosses at  the gym made them the butt of gay jokes and called each of them a "f---ing dyke." The bosses hounded them for sex and suggested that they, two trainers, should vacation on Lesbos Island.

The women were fired Dec. 2 after they complained about nasty locker talk and they were replaced by straight trainers with less experience. Apparently, at least one of the two women, Deobrah Cooke, was earning $100,000 a year.

The first gym was opened by Celebrity bodybuilder David Barton in Chelsea, in 1994. Apparently, the gym was sued previously in 2005 by a straight male member, claiming gay sex was rampant in the locker room and that other members gawked at him when he undressed.

Hollywood loves cool shoes by Creative Recreation, Los Angeles footwear company

creative recreation shoes
Creative Recreation is a, Los Angeles based,  lifestyle footwear company that specializes in stylish men’s, women’s and children’s sneakers, heels, wedges and boots. It’s mission is to create a collection of footwear that transcends all stereotypes. Shoes were developed and constructed with the goal to maintain a fashionable look whether being worn with slacks and a button-up or jeans and a t-shirt. These shoes are very cool looking and have been seen on the feet of Hollywood’s most stylish actors and musicians.

According to online retailer Zappos, Creative Recreation was launched in the fall of 2002 in order to fill a void in the footwear market. Up until this time, no one was offering footwear to young professionals with style. The three founders set out to innovate the market and were able to incorporate the comfort of an athletic shoe with the materialization of a dress shoe to create the ultimate crossbreed, resulting in the Creative Recreation men’s and Creative Recreation women’s shoe collection.

creative recreation sh
Creative Recreation sneakers grew from the concept that this generation wasn’t going to follow the same old well-traveled roadmaps of previous times. A new journey beckoned for Creative Recreation shoes: to embrace fashion-freedom with a design approach that blurs the rules. Creative Recreation shoes follow their own lines. Imaginative and original, Creative Recreation sneakers will bring amusement to your senses.

These shoes are indeed very colorful and cool looking. Check out their website. Unfortunately, the website felt very inconvenient: hard to navigate and, the small print is, hard to read.

Creative Recreation shoes are available at online vendors, like Zappos and at several regular retail stores. In the Westside of Los Angeles, they can be found at the following  locations.

I never imagined I will see this but, finally, I have found a boot camp that will be held in water. However, it happens to be in Bozeman, Montana. Assuming Montana must be cold and snowy these days, this must be the right kind of indoor workout for them.

The following notice appeared in December 26, 2010 issue of The Bozeman Daily Chronicle

”Water fitness boot camp at swim center
Posted: Sunday, December 26, 2010 12:00 am

The Bozeman Swim Center will offer a water fitness boot camp on Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 3-19, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

Held in the deep and the shallow water, the classes will include out of the water conditioning exercises. Workouts will incorporate muscular strengthening, aerobic conditioning, core conditioning, and stretching in a weightless and total non-impact environment. An assortment of equipment for water buoyancy and resistance will be utilized. Classes will be tailored to the individual; participants are asked to take a water bottle.

Fee is $30 for Bozeman residents, $42 non-residents; register at the Swim Center, 1211 W. Main St., or call 582-2910 and pay with a Visa or MasterCard.”

Makers of exercise ball get sued by NBA’s Sacramento Kings

exercise ball
You may have seen people exercising with those gigantic balls, awkwardly placed under their belly or butt. It was bound to cause some problem sometime. It turned out that a basketball player of NBA’s Sacramento Kings got injured with that ball.

In October 2009, Francisco Garcia broke his wrist during a workout routine on an exercise ball that exploded. Consequently, Garcia missed 57 games in 2009-10 and severely harmed his team. Kings. Apparently, the ball was advertised to be burst-resistant, but obviously it was not or the player may have been damn too big for that ball.

Now, the team (Kings) is trying to recoup some of its wasted money from that season by suing the makers of the exercise ball known as the Gymnic "Burst Resistant" Plus Stability Ball.
Francisco Garcia injured by ball

The lawsuit seeks $4 million from Italy-based manufacturer Ledraplastic, ball distributor M-F Athletic Company and Ball Dynamics International. That's how much the team says it paid Garcia during games he missed because of the injury.
Let’s see if the ball makers have balls to play ball with the lawyers.

Warrior workouts with fitness trainer Jennifer Cassetta in Los Angeles

”I work with over-stressed and over-worked people who have put their health on the side while trying to take care of everyone and everything else in their lives.”
               - Jennifer Cassetta, Fitness Trainer, Martial Artist, Los Angeles

Jennifer Cassetta www.healthandthecity.net
Well, that sounds like all of us can benefit from her expertise.

Jennifer Cassetta is a certified personal trainer, clinical nutritionist, and 3rd degree martial arts instructor  based in Los Angeles. Dedication to health and fitness runs in Jennifer’s family where her father and grandmother also practiced martial arts. Jennifer spent 10 years training and teaching HapKiDo, a holistic Korean martial art which combines mind, body, and spiritual training, at the World Martial Arts Center in NYC.

Jennifer started her fitness and nutrition business in New York and named it “Health and the City” . However, soon, she ran  into legal dispute with HBO. HBO, claiming her business name was similar to ‘Sex and the City’, asked her to drop the name. Jennifer stayed firm and eventually, after battling for a while, HBO backed down. Apparently, HBO found out that a real fight is not as easy as unilaterally hiking the cable fee.

Towards the end of 2009, Jennifer moved to California and, currently, operates her personal training and nutrition business from Brentwood area of West Los Angeles. Here is a summary of her exceptional abilities:

- Certified Personal Trainer, National Academy of Sports Medicine
- Third Degree Black Belt Instructor, HapKiDo
- Black belt in VSK Jujitsu
- Master's degree in nutrition
- Holistic health education from New York's Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
- Creator of the popular Stilettos and Self Defense™ workshop, which is designed for women of all ages to teach them basic self defense and help gain confidence.
- Creator of, 3 part DVD, self-defense series “About Homeland Defense”,
- In summary, this fitness instructor, Jennifer Cassetta, is a formidable package of beauty, brain and physical abilities.

How are the workouts?
“Jennifer's Warrior Boot Camp is not just a great workout opportunity. It is a lifestyle commitment that goes beyond sweating…I feel stronger and smarter about my health.”

Jennifer's unique whole-body approach to health is a blend of her extensive training in HapKiDo, fitness and nutrition. You will get an invigorating kickboxing cardio workout, yoga-like stretching, core strength training and you might even learn self defense techniques. It can improve your flexibility, alleviate stress, enhance your focus,  help you lose weight and develop a lean body. Additionally, you will also benefit from Ki training to support your life force energy.

Folks, you cannot get such a capable trainer and this kind of workout by only rolling your butt on top of a giant exercise balloon and, you can trust me on that because I have a big butt.
