Sultan Kosen |
Sultan Kosen, 29, from Turkey
is world’s tallest men at 8 feet, 3 inches. For the last three years in a row he has been named the
world's tallest living man by Guinness World Records. He appear to have
grown one inch taller each year.
His unusual growth is a result of a tumor in his pituitary
gland. That tumor is not cancerous or hereditary but it produced excess growth
hormones.
In 2010, he went under radiosurgery at the University of
Virginia Medical Center. Recently, it was announced that finally Sultan’s height
has stabilized as his tumor has stopped growing as well as the overproduction
of growth hormone.
Sultan had undergone three unsuccessful surgeries in the
past to remove tumor. Getting taller was no fun as it was also making him
sicker. His joint, bones and muscles are too weak to support his big frame and
he uses crutches to stand walk. In addition, he suffered from visual complications
because of the tumor. His height became problematic even in the hospital where
they had to put two normal-sized hospital beds together to accommodate his body.
Other than his exceptional height, Sultan considers himself
a normal person. He says the advantage of being tall is he can easily help his mother
with certain domestic jobs such as changing light bulbs and hanging curtains.
