Brazil’s booming cosmetic surgery business

Brazilian beauty
Brazil is known for its Rio Carnival, beautiful tanned women and warm climate. However, Brazil also enjoys booming cosmetic surgery business for rich and poor alike.  In fact, barely clad, samba dancers in Rio Carnival are often a display of surgically enhanced breasts and buttons and such results are not by accident.

Brazils is considered a pioneer in plastic surgery and a destination of choice for cosmetic surgery tourism. In fact, Brazil performs over 11 million cosmetic surgery operations a year, second only to the Untied States.

Brazil’s cosmetic surgery industry was pioneered by plastic surgeon, Ivo Pitanguy, now 85. He also pioneered the idea of providing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to the poor for free.

Cosmetic surgery seems to be a normally accepted practice in Brazil and they believe cosmetic surgery is about more than just beauty.  It is about psychological improvement by raising self esteem of a person. Brazilians believe that beauty is a right and everybody deserves to enjoy it.

Hundreds of clinics offer free or low cost cosmetic surgery to the poor. Once selected, one may have to wait months or years but they may get the desired service whatever that may be: breast and buttock implants, liposuction, facelifts, hair removal and procedures to flatten prominent ears.

The hospitals offering free cosmetic surgeries feel that such programs are beneficial to the hospitals as well. These procedures give young doctors opportunity to perfect their cosmetic surgery skills which have made them some of the bests in the world.
