Brazilian Blowout blows $4.5 million in settlement

Brazilian Blowout is a popular hair straightening treatment sold to stylists. 

The product ran into controversy because it seems to emit formaldehyde and there were complaints that it caused problems such as, eye irritation, breathing discomfort and nosebleeds.

In January 2012, Brazilian blowout settled with California Attorney General over its labeling practices. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and under California’s Prop 65, consumers most be warned of the presence of carcinogens. The settlement cost for Brazilian blowout in that case was $600,000.

Now, in another case, the company has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit for $4.5 million. The company can still market the product without reformulation but cannot claim it is “formaldehyde free” In addition, the company will provide instructions on safer use of the product.
