Amazon stops selling whale and dolphin meat

Amazon Japan, whale meat
Amazon is not just for books anymore. It turns out, keeping up with its name, Amazon has been selling a number of amazing things.

Recently, it was reported by The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and the International Humane Society that Amazon Japan has been selling hundreds of products from whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetacean food products).

They called on Amazon to stop supporting commercial whaling by immediately and permanently banning the sale of such products. This
December 2011 report pointed out that 147 whale products were found for sale on Amazon Japan.

Whales are protected by two international treaties: the International Whaling Commission’s moratorium on commercial whaling and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which forbids international trade.

EIA produced a short film to describe the situation and urged Amazon to stop selling whale product.

On February 21, 2012, Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Amazon reacted quickly and removed those products from its website

Seattle based Amazon is the largest online retailer with 2011 revenue of $48 billion. The company has market value of $82 billion and its sock is traded on Nasdaq under the symbol AMZN.
