David Murdock’s recipe for longevity: 33 of the healthiest foods

Healthy food, fruits & vegetables
David H. Murdock is Chairman and owner of Dole Food Company, Inc., the world's largest producer and marketer of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, packaged and frozen foods. Mr. Murdock advocates healthy eating to promote longevity. At 86, he is enjoying the robust health, energy, and mental creativity of someone many decades younger.

His secret:
large quantities of fruit and vegetables, plus an hour of daily exercise.

He takes no pills, not even aspirin, and certainly no supplements -- everything he needs comes from his fish-vegetarian diet, which incorporates 30-40 different kinds of fruit and vegetables every week.

He does his own grocery shopping and spends 50-60 minutes on cardio and strength training every day. According to Mr. Murdock, by eating many fruits and vegetables in place of fast food and junk food, people could avoid obesity. Obesity accelerates aging even faster than smoking, according to scientific research.

Here is a list of 33 fruit and vegetables, the Healthiest Foods on Earth, by Mr. Murdock:

RevAbs, Beachbody’s 90 days weight loss and fitness challenge

RevAbs from www.beachbody.com
Earlier this month, I came across an Ad in the Craigslist, Los Angeles looking for volunteers who want to get a lean, sexy, six pack Abs in just 90 days.

I responded to the Ad and, surprisingly, got a response three days later. I thought there would be hundreds of people interested and, since I noticed the ad three days later, I would not get any response. Anyway, it turned out the Ad was placed by Santa Monica based fitness products marketing company, BEACHBODY.

They asked me for more personal physical and lifestyle information and then I was invited for a meeting on Monday, December 13, 2010 in a Santa Monica office. There were a number of people but none of them looked extremely overweight or out of shape. Meeting was almost like an audition. It required filling questionnaire on paper followed by seeing three people in a room, in front of a camera. They took a few pictures of me without shirt and asked a few questions about my diet and why I want to participate in the program. The meeting was video taped.

The workout will start on January 10 and the program will last 90 days. Those selected will be notified. I don’t know whether I will be selected because I, although not muscular, am in a descent, active shape already and may not be a good case subject. However, if possible, I will still follow the program and report its outcome in 90 days.

The details of the Ad were as follows:

LA Fitness: staying fit by getting kicked & trampled

Trampling, what a feeling

I had never imagined that I could get some workout and earn money by kicking around people legally until recently, when I saw an Ad in the Craigslist, Los Angeles.

A man in Venice Beach was looking for mean, brutal and evil people who are willing to stand/ walk/ jump over his face and body and, even, break his bones. He really wants you to hurt him bad and, in return, he is willing to pay you $25/ hour, up to a maximum of $350 a day.

Sounds impossible? No really, the man is a stunt man and, apparently, he needs this kind of beating to stay fit and in working shape. I responded to his Ad but got no response. My guess is he may have been overwhelmed with a large number of responses. Or, may be he got scared by the kind of beating I told he can expect from me.

According to recently issued report by the Surgeon General, “Even brief exposure to tobacco smoke causes immediate harm to the body, damaging cells and inflaming tissue in ways that can lead to serious illness and death.

Every exposure to tobacco, from occasional smoking or secondhand smoke, can damage DNA in ways that lead to cancer. Tobacco smoke damages almost every organ in your body and one cigarette can kill you.

According to the report, about 40 million Americans smoke — 20% of adults and older teens. Tobacco kills more than 443,000 a year.

Cigarette smoking costs the country more than $193 billion a year in health care costs and lost productivity.

Apparently, it's a simple, relaxing treatment and is aided by V-Herbal Therapy treatment. The two predominant herbs in the steam bath mixture are mugwort and wormwood which have been used in Eastern medicine for hundreds of years.

In the U.S. chai-yok treatments are not easy to find. They are mainly available in some alternative holistic health centers. In Los Angeles area, the following two spas provide such treatment:

U.S. military is providing healthier meals

US military is trying for healthier meals

For generations, Army food has been considered average at best, and the diet fed to troops seldom took into account obesity or other long-range health risks. But those practices are evolving.

The U.S. military has started a more emphatic effort to change soldiers' eating habits, including color-coded labels that designate healthy items, and drill sergeants standing watch over the chow line, calling out soldiers who don't put enough fruit on their plates, according to the Associated Press

Army training sites across the nation, the mess hall is beginning to look different. Milk and juice dispensers are replacing soda fountains, and whole grains are being substituted for white bread and pasta.

The military increasingly believes that producing quality recruits starts at the dinner table during basic training, so it has started a more emphatic effort to change their eating habits. Color-coded labels point the way to healthy items, and drill sergeants stand watch over the chow line, calling out soldiers who don’t put enough fruit on their plates.

Many new soldiers have never given much thought to their diets - a problem that reflects the poor food choices of a nation with more and more obese people.

EPA permitted honeybee killer pesticide despite own scientists’ warning

honeybees are getting killed by pesticide

Honeybees not only produce honey, the food, but, as pollinators, they are also crucial to our food production in general. However, it has been reported that honeybees have experienced mysterious annual massive die-offs (known as "colony collapse disorder") here in the United States at least since 2006.

A document leaked by Colorado beekeeper reveals a dodgy dealing between German agrichemical giant Bayer and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The issue involves permitting the use of pesticide, clothianidin; which is toxic to honeybees.

Apparently, an internal EPA memo confirms that the very agency charged with protecting the environment is ignoring the warnings of its own scientists about clothianidin, a pesticide from which Bayer racked up €183 million (about $262 million) in sales in 2009.

Clothianidin has been widely used on corn, the largest U.S. crop, since 2003. Suppliers sell seeds pre-treated with it. Like other members of the neonicotinoid family of pesticides, clothianidin gets "taken up by a plant's vascular system and expressed through pollen and nectar," according to Pesticide Action Network of North America (PANNA), which leaked the document along with Beyond Pesticides. That effect makes it highly toxic to a crop's pests -- and also harmful to pollen-hoarding honeybees,.

Corn is one of our major crops which covers 88 million acres of farmland nationwide and produces a bounty of protein-rich pollen on which honeybees love to feast. According to PANNA, other crops commonly treated with clothianidin include canola, soy, sugar beets, sunflowers, and wheat -- all among the most widely planted U.S. crops.

U.S. soldiers using diet pills, liposuction to meet standards

US soldiers and fitness
According to the Army Times, the US soldiers are resorting to extreme measures -- taking diet pills and laxatives, even starving themselves and getting liposuction -- in order to meet the military’s weight standards.

More than a third of uniformed men and women do not meet the Army’s weight standards, according to a 2009 military fitness report, and those officers are subjected to dreaded tape measurements to determine body fat percentage.

If soldiers exceed the body fat limits, they cannot earn leadership roles or promotions, the paper said. Officers can even lose their jobs if they do not shed a significant amount weight in two months -- a very real threat, considering about 24,000 soldiers were discharged between 1992 and 2007 for failure to meet weight standards, according to a report published in Military Medicine.

A soldier based at Fort Riley in Kansas told the paper she recently saw an advertisement for liposuction at the post gym. The Army Times also found ads for the cosmetic procedure in base newspapers at Fort Hood, Tex., Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Campbell, Ky.

Meanwhile, military leaders and doctors continued to warn against the risks of unhealthy weight loss methods.

beneficial effects of exercise on diabetes

exercise can prevent diabetes
New guidelines, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, by American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Diabetes Association, suggest that exercise can help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes and improve overall health and quality of life.

The recommendations call for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise spread out at least three days during the week, with no more than two consecutive days between bouts of aerobic activity. The new guidelines provide specific advice for those whose diabetes may limit vigorous exercise. However, the majority of people with type 2 diabetes can exercise safely, as long as certain precautions are taken.

The presence of diabetes complications should not be used as an excuse to avoid participation in physical activity. Experts also suggest that physical activity be a conscious part of every person's health plan, as appropriate for age and physical condition.

A few tips for staying fit and diabetes free

Make fitness a fun family affair
Mike Adams, the Natural News, used to be borderline diabetic and suffered from hypoglycemia and borderline obesity at the same time. But he was able to cure his own pre-diabetes condition by ignoring a lot of conventional information and by teaching himself the principles of nutrition.

Now, at age 41, Mike is healthy and athletic, lifts weights, swims, bicycles and exercises on a regular basis while carefully choosing foods that will prevent diabetes for a lifetime.

Here are his top five secrets for preventing (and even reversing) diabetes:

1) Stop eating all refined sugars
Such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), (especially soda), or other refined sugars.

2) Ingest large quantities of daily superfoods
Such as spirulina, stabilized rice bran, chlorella and high-density superfood powders such as Boku Superfood and Living Fuel.

3) Exercise a little bit every day
Even just walking 30 minutes a day can have a huge impact. The key is to make it a daily activity.

4) Get sunshine or vitamin D supplemen

5) Avoid all processed foods.
Avoid eating refined anything. That includes white breads, processed meat  and dairy products.

According to Mike, with these five things, you can  reverse diabetes yourself. Diabetes is not a difficult disease to prevent or reverse because it is merely the biological effect of following certain lifestyle (bad foods, no exercise) that can be reversed and prevented in virtually anyone.

China’s economic rise and obesity explosion

Obesity in China
China’s economy has been growing by leaps and bounds. The economic reforms have transformed the live of Chinese. Many are now richer and, also, bigger and fatter than they ever before.

Observers say that just a generation ago, hardly anyone was overweight in that country. Many Chinese people did not have enough to eat - some still do not – and millions of people are thought to have died in a famine in the early 1960s. The rising number of overweight Chinese people is, in part, the result of the country's remarkable economic growth over the last 30 years. Observers believe that a number of factors have contributed to this problem.

People's material lives have become a lot better as economy and the society has developed. Now, people have access to all kinds of food products. There's great variety and people can usually buy whatever they want to eat.

There is rise of processed food and supermarkets, and decreased physical activity as people move from the countryside to the cities. The result is people move to city and get fat.

China's faces obesity challenge
China's family planning policies have been blamed for the growing number of overweight children. Many families have just one child and, some say, the children are spoilt by parents. These children are used to eating whatever they want.

Some parents also blame China's education system, which puts little emphasis on sporting activities and exercise.

Also, there is 'Nowhere to exercise' because of very little public space in urban areas and even when there is you often cannot walk on the grass.

Obesity, in general, has been linked to a range of illnesses such as heart disease, and diabetes and cancer. These people are more liable to suffer from a range of illnesses, and are already putting pressure on China's healthcare system and on the society. Because of its large population, over 1 billion people, it will become a huge problem for China. According to a recent report there are now more than 90 million diabetics in China - about one in 10 adults. With this trend, China, the most populated country, is about to become the epicenter of diabetes on this earth.

Give up smoking for greater happiness

It is said that giving up smoking most likely makes you miserable. However, Brown University researchers have found that giving up smoking leads to greater happiness and elevated mood. The researchers examined data on 236 male and female smokers who wanted to give up. The subjects were examined seven days before they stopped smoking and again 2, 8, 16 and 28 weeks after their quit date.

Those who managed to quit for a while, the researchers found, were very happy.
Those who failed to maintain smoke cessation had their moods darkened significantly, and even to lower depths than before the whole study began.
Those who failed straight away were found to be the unhappiest of all the groups.

Quit smoking
Nor surprisingly, the researchers concluded that the link between happiness and smoking cessation was strong. These researchers did not address the fact that the most difficult part for the smokers is to quit smoking and abstain afterward. It would have been useful if their study would have also tried to find the means to help people quit smoking.

In any case, it is a good idea to quit smoking if you want to be happy and healthy.

European are getting fat

half of the Europeans are oveweight
According to a recently released Health at a Glance Europe 2010 report, by the European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), over half of adults living in the European Union countries are now overweight or obese. The rate of obesity has more than doubled over the past 20 years in most EU member states.

Currently, one in seven children in the EU are overweight or obese and one of the reasons could be that only one in five children in the EU exercise regularly. Children who are obese or overweight are more likely to suffer from poor health later in life. It would be helpful to start the healthy habits from a young age.

The report covers the 27 European Union member states, three European Free Trade Association countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) and Turkey. Romania faired the best and UK the worst.

Weight gain: Sugar vs. high-fructose corn syrup

According to a  study presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society, high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener used in soft drinks and many other products, isn't more likely than sucrose, commonly called table sugar, to promote weight gain,  The study was supported by the Corn Refiners Association, a trade organization representing corn refiners who make high-fructose corn syrup and other products.

According to experts, evidence so far suggests it's the sugar intake, not the type that leads to weight gain and other problems. Therefore, the advice is to limit sugar intake, that mean all added sugar.

Increase in obesity causing steady rise in death risk

I don’t know whether it should be surprising. A study funded by the National Institutes of Health concludes that your risk of death rises steadily with every overweight pound you gain,.

Even if you don't smoke and are in otherwise good health, your risk of death goes up 31% with every 5-point increase in BMI, a measure of body mass based on weight and height.

The study pooled data from 19 long-term studies that followed 1.46 million white adults for five to 28 years. The findings appear in the Dec. 2 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

10 lies about Senate Food Safety Bill S. 510

The Food Safety Modernization Act, S.510 has the potential for turning into the Patriot Act for food as it can have devastating affects on farmers and small businesses. It would hand vast powers, similar to what we are witnessing with TSA’s scanning at the airports, and funding to the FDA in the hope that it can clean up the food supply and protect all Americans from food-borne pathogens.

According to Mike Adams, the Natural News, it's all a big lie. He has listed ten lies that have been promoted about S.510 by the U.S. Congress, lobbyists for the food industry giants and the mainstream media:

1 - Most deaths from food poisoning are caused by fresh produce
Fact: By far the majority of food poisoning is caused by the consumption of spoiled processed foods, dead foods and animal-human transmission of pathogens.

2 - Under S.510, the FDA would only recall products it knows to be contaminated.

Not true. S.510 merely requires the FDA to have "reason to believe" a food is contaminated.
Fact is the U.S. Senate removed the requirement that the FDA needed "credible evidence" in order to recall a product and, instead, replaced that with the FDA only needing "reason to believe."

3 - They didn't tell you that nearly 70% of grocery store chickens are contaminated with salmonella every day

4 - S.510 will exclude and protect small farmers

5 - The FDA needs more power to enforce food safety

6 - Fresh produce is contaminated because of a lack of paperwork

7 - The American people are dying in droves from unsafe fresh food

8 - The FDA just wants to make food "safer"
9 - Food smuggling is a huge problem in America

10 - S.510 will make America's food supply the safest in the world
