Canker Sores and SLS free Toothpastes

SLS free toothpaste
Recently, while browsing Craigslist, I came across an interesting post emphasizing “I'm not selling anything.” The post was about Canker sores and it got me interested in further research on this subject and the benefits of  SLS free toothpastes. I rarely develop canker but I have compiled a LIST of SLS free Toothpastes.

But, first, here is the POST from the Craigslist:

Do you get Canker sores "mouth ulcers"? (I'm not selling anything)

Canker sores, also known as "mouth ulcers," plague the lives of millions of people all over the world. These small oral ulcers can make life unbearable when eating, drinking, speaking, or swallowing.

Unfortunately, the public ends up creating their own "canker sore" problem by using commercial toothpastes, which contain an ingredient that is proved to be linked to canker sores. It's called sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and it is placed into toothpastes and some mouthwashes in order to create foaming! (Sodium lauryl sulfate is also the main ingredient in your shampoo - go check it out.)

The harshness of this chemical has been proven to create microscopic damage to the oral tissue which lines the inside of your mouth, which then leads to canker sores. The companies that sell toothpaste with SLS in it also sell canker sore medications so you can see why they do it. A good place to find SLS free toothpaste is Trader Joes, Whole Food Market, or GNC

--------
Available literature suggests that a variety of factors may contribute to the formation of canker sores such as: acidic foods, food allergies, menstruation, heredity, impaired immunity, mouth injuries, and some chemicals, especially sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which is found in most commercial toothpastes.

However, it seems the main cause is not known and, all of these factors are secondary triggers and not the primary cause. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) definitely appears to be a significant culprit and it may make body more vulnerable to other triggers of Canker sores. Canker sores tend to gradually diminish when people switch to SLS free toothpaste.

Therefore, it is prudent to use toothpaste that would not trigger canker sores. SLS free toothpastes are available at a number of natural product stores and online retailers.
