Iguanas Meat export to the U.S. will solve Puerto Rico’s problems

Iguana
When you think of iguanas, the movie “The Night of the Iguana” comes to mind. This 1964 movie filmed in Mexico, starring Richard Burton and Ava Gardner, was directed by John Huston.

However, Puerto Rican are not having any fun with iguanas where they haves become a massive problem.

Iguana is an invasive species in Puerto Rico where they were first released in the wild by owners in 1970’s. Now, there are an estimated 4 MILLION iguanas in Puerto Rico which is almost the same as the number of people living there. Iguanas are responsible for burrowing under buildings and destroying foundations, and causing blackouts by building nests near the warmth of electric plants. The problem is so severe, that even airplanes can’t land because the runways are covered with iguanas. Puerto Rico spends about $80,000 a year just to kill and remove iguanas from the airports.

Puerto Rican authorities have come up with a plan to solve this problem by exporting iguana meat to the U.S. There is plenty of meat in Iguanas some of whom can grow up to 6 feet and live up to 20 years. Iguanas meat can sell of about $6 a pound and there high demand in the U.S. because of Latino and Asian immigrants.

I asked a latino in Los Angeles what he thought of eating iguana meat. He answered:
“Eu amo carne de iguana, mas é difícil de encontrar por aqui.”
(I love iguana meat but it is hard to find around here)

I suppose that sounds like enthusiastic thumbs up for iguana meat.
